The winner takes it all

Good morning! What a lot of lovely cybercrop creations there are. I've spent the last couple of evenings having a look at all of them and deciding on my favourites ahead of the design team picking our favourite later on this week and I've been so impressed. We'll be deliberating long and hard I reckon!

Some Cybercrop Winners :)

We have loved looking at all of the cybercrop projects that have been created. And we have a few winners to announce over the next few days.

Sunday Challenge

Good Morning! I hope that this post finds you well and that you weren't all up too late uploading your cybercrop and August goodies to the site. We will be having a look at each and every project over the next week and revealing our winners too.

And so to today's challenge from Amanda:
As it's my birthday week, I want to see your birthday pages or mini albums! I always struggle to make birthday pages that don't look 'cheesy', so I'm looking forward to stealing all your ideas!

She's not alone in struggling I'd say but luckily the design team are on hand with some inspiration to get you up and running. Remember to upload your September LOs using the Inlinkz sidebar by 2nd October.

Amanda:


I decided to focus my layout on the thoughts I've been having lately about my life, and getting another year older. I've tucked my journaling into a little pocket I made by making a slit in my patterned paper, as it's my private thoughts.

Andrea:




I figured that I didn't need a picture of my kiddo blowing out birthday candles . . .besides that I couldn't find one . . . but I was able to find this beauty which is of my birthday girl playing with one of her cherished birthday gifts that she got from her auntie! I did some more masking . . .this time using circles . .. then I found some oldie but still way goodie stickers from K & Co. I added bling and journaling along with 2 different types of flowers. Can't wait to see your birthday pages, too! ** I forgot to add, this layout is 8 1/2 x 11 which is a size that I RARELY scrap! It was a fun addition to the birthday challenge for me.

Anna:

This photo is of my nephew on his 2nd Birthday a few weeks ago, he loved to sing along when ever everyone sang Happy Birthday to him even though he can't actually say the words yet!!

I painted over some stars for the background to leave the outline of them and added some musical note paper and lots of borders and some hats!

Usually Bday layouts are really cheesy so this is a nice challenge for us to make bday pages in a different way. Ive tried to think out of the box and why not making a layout of really the birth day?

This page features my little niece, who was born a few days after Xmas, but had a cardiac and breath stops and almost died. The layout talks about her birth. The first days were very critical and we didnt knew if she would make. The picture of from her, on the first day my brother could hold her (she was +- 10 days there). The cute outfit she is wearing was a gift of mine...So i love this picture.

Lisa:

This is one birthday that is yet to be recorded. My hubby's 32nd, spent in hospital
with our very poorly little boy who got rushed into hospital at 11pm an hour before hubby's birthday started with appendicitus. A birthday none of us will forget.

Nic:

Turning 13 is a bit of a milestone birthday - not only is it the start of those 'teen' years but in my son's case, it was also the start of an deep seated aversion to the camera lens and having his photo taken! Although I think my photo's of this occasion are technically far from perfect, they are the only ones I have and they do capture the emotions and the memories associated with this particular birthday celebration, so I went ahead and scrapped them anyway.

I chose papers with a 'typical' boy feel, added my journaling on a slide out card which slots in under the photos, used a lightning transparency for the first half of my title and finished by adding liquid pearls to highlight the chocolate button numbers on his cake.

Sara:
We recently celebrated my youngest son's 1st birthday, so I had quite a few piccies to pick from. I love this one of cupcake smashed all over his face, it's one of those photos you just have to get on their first birthday.

I chose a bright colour scheme, as its a fun way to scrap birthday photos. You can always choose to change your piccies to black and white to make mixing the bright colours easier.

I am in love with birthdays. Specifically birthday party planning for my growing daughter. This is a special day for me too because it is the day I celebrate becoming a mother for the first time ( and who can forget your first time, right?). Every year, around her birthday, I'm in a frenzy of planning, buying, sorting out loot bags, baking cakes and doing everything party or birthday related. I absolutely love it.

So, of course, the birthday layout is always part of the fun. The fun of recording the after-birthday memories. Looking through the gallery of digital photos I've taken and making sure to select the ones that record her day 'just so'.

This year, my daughter's birthday theme was pink. Fashionably pink. There was dressing up in pink, making pink icing decorated cookies with pink glittery sprinkles, pink dresses, pink balloons. Everything pink. Hence the pink layout - with a touch of orange here to spice things up a bit.

And who says one page is enough? To go with the overkill, I had to do a two pager (something I don't do very often). Complete with a bit of misting and the necessary journaling, even my hubby says this page is smashin' cool. Love it. I had these 'Sassafrass Lass' Paper whimsies which were just perfect for the occasion - why use one when you can use all in the pack. Pearly and shiny American Crafts brads to top it up and the layout is complete!

:) Happy Pinky Birthday memories for me (and my daughter).. :)! Hope you have fun making those birthday layouts too!

Journaling says: This is the birthday story. 6th is a special number: from little child to little lady. To celebrate, this year we had two parties. One on the 18th, with five other girls. All pink. All lovely with take home crafts and homemade cupcakes and sandwiches. And another on the 21st with all her classmates and school friends. It was such a blast. Lara shared the party with Olivia who is also born on the 18th of August. Lara’s big cake was as she wished - a skating princess. Her friends played dress up and we had an entertainer play games with the kids. Lara had a few things on her wish list for her birthday and we got her a couple of things. Her biggest wish was for a scooter which she just loved to play with. We took it out the evening of the birthday to the park. Happy 6th birthday my princess!

One thing I like to do when I scrapbook my kid's birthdays is list off a few things they like at that age - that's what my journaling does on this page. Because my daughter's birthday is in the summer, I wanted the colors to be sunny & warm. I used a mix of new and not-so-new product. The lined paper is SEI from last year, and the flowers were cut from an SEI paper from at least 3 years ago. Also used some current Jenni Bowlin (butterflies), Sassafras ('six' tag) and October Afternoon (labels) - all snatched from current Studio Calico kits.

Deadline day looms!

Tomorrow is deadline day! Didn't that come around quickly?? So, you have until midnight (GMT) tomorrow (4th September) to upload all your cybercrop projects and add a link in the comment section of the relevant class. We'll be announcing winners throughout next week :)

Wednesday Extra from Sara Noendeng

This week our Wednesday extra is an additional challenge brought to you by Sara.  Not only is Sara an impressive scrapbooker but she's also a bit of a whizz at designing her own sketches (and a little birdie tells me we might be getting to see a few more of Sara's sketches here on the site in the future - watch this space! *big wink*)

Sara said:  For today's Wednesday Extra, I thought I would give you something extra with a sketch.

I love to design sketches and especially love to play with them as well. They are great jumpstart when you are feeling a little lacking in the creativity department or if just want to create a quick page without too much thought.

I created the following layout:

It took me a total of approximately one hour, including letting the glimmermist dry. It's always great to scrap a page so quickly, without fuss.

Sunday Challenge

How are those cybercrop projects coming along? We've enjoyed looking at the ones you've posted already and hope to see some more before 4th September. There have been some really ugly papers on show after last week's task too. Brilliant!! It's the final challenge of August today and you can link it using the inlinkz in the sidebar so that we can all admire it :)

So here's a new challenge for you:

'This is something that everyone will be able to join in with! Hopefully this will encourage you to go out with fresh eyes to take in your surroundings. Even if you can't get out and about at the moment, you can search online for a picture :)

Scrap about a local landmark, and what it signifies to you. Maybe it's the first thing you see when you step out of the house, maybe it's a monument in the centre of town. It doesn't have to be something that other people would consider significant. Enjoy!'


Amanda: Technically this landmark isn't in my hometown, it's about a 90 minute drive away, but it's one of the things that reminds me of home. It was one of the first places we visited after moving back to the area, so I thought I'd focus my page on that.

Surprise, surprise, I used mists on my layout! Is everyone bored of seeing them yet?! I did use a new product though - that Tim Holtz Tissue Tape. I have to say I think you might be seeing something else crop up on a lot of my pages from now on!

Andrea:

I found a picture of my high school gym which is known simly as The Dome. It is a very important landmark in my town. It houses the gym and the auditorium. It is actually supposed to resemble a baseball . . . but it often gets confused for a golfball or an alien ship!! It was built in honor of Harmon Killebrew, a retired major league baseball player! I found this picture of it in my old pictures and I mounted it on the school colors (red, black, and white). I then mounted the picture on a misted piece of white cardstock. I added a ruffle of red ribbon and stapled it under a star. I added another strip of ribbon and stapled it at the upper corner. To finish it off, I added the journaling in label strips and markers!

Anna:Across the road from us there is a Post Office in our village and I have lots of memories when it used to be a busy little shop as well. I used to go in there and get my little bag of jelly teddies!! It is sad now though as it is now only a part-time Post Office with no shop. But it still is one of the popular landmarks in the village and one I see when ever I leave the house and we still say 'we live opposite the Post Office!'

Fabi: Here it comes with the little plate (actually a refrigerator magnet) added.
Basically I wanted to use a big photo as main part of the layout and used 2 colors of mist to have a cool and simple layout. The journaling talks about how I was impressed with the city and I've added a touch using some stickers instead of writting. Do you like it? :)

Lisa:
I love that we can walk to such beautiful places from where we live. This is one of my favourite places we go.

Nic:

I love old buildings and this local landmark has been a long familiar sight. I first visited this tudor relic when at school on an art trip and still have my sketch from this occasion! My journaling reads: "I have driven past this familiar landmark umpteen times and visited frequently. I love the sense of of history evoked by this topsy, turvy building and it's quirky charm.

Rebekah: I actually really really struggled with this one. I live in a town just outside Reading and it's fairly leafy and non descript with no major landmarks. There is a nature reserve where we walk the dog, but that's mostly grass and trees and I don't really see it as a landmark. I absolutely love living here but clearly it's not for the landmarks ;) What we do have in one of the parks is a graffiti wall. I actually love grafitti when it's controlled and there are some really talented people out there who are pretty nifty with a spray can. My fiance captured a part of the wall when he took Bailey's photo last week and I thought it would work well with this challenge. I lifted the LO from Jules the bling princess and I love it!

Sara:

I am a city girl at heart. The city is about half an hour away from here as I'm out in the suburbs but it's still close enough to visit regularly. I love seeing the lights of the building reflecting off the water at night. It's one image I could definitely never tire of.

Sue:
Scotland is known for its castles and cliffs. And bad weather. Here is the lovely local landmark that is a short drive from us. It is a lovely cliff area overlooking the cold North Sea, so visitors' children often come here in snow suits even in April.. the wind blows strong.

But the beauty of the area and the majestic cliffs and the ruins of Dunnottar Castle are a lovely attraction to visit. A bit of history, magic and mystery at the 'Cliffs of Dunnottar'.

Valerie:
The town of Middletown, New Jersey is huge. It borders the Raritan Bay and then stretches into farmland and forest to the west. There are lots of landmarks here, historical (this was a significant pass-through during the Revolutionary War) and otherwise. Here's the otherwise:

The 'Scary Clown' of Middletown, aka 'The Food Circus Clown'. His prominent location on a main artery that runs through our town has propelled him to stardom. He's even been featured in the movies. How could I not make a layout about this guy? He's haunted me since I moved to New Jersey back in 1974. So here's what I made:

materials: cardstock: Bazzill, patterned paper: Cosmo Cricket, Sassafras Lass, Studio Calico; stamps: Studio Calico (starburst, label), Close To My Heart (flower); letters: Cosmo Cricket, Making Memories; punch: Stampin Up; spray ink: Tattered Angels, buttons

I decided to keep this layout fairly simple. I stamped the starburst around some of the circles on the background paper, then added small punched circles from the striped paper used for the flowers to add a little fun & depth. The kraft backing page is actually misted with an opaque white spray in, just to give it a little extra detail.

As you can see, the Scary Clown is now employed by a large liquor store, which now occupies the space of the former Food Circus. Even though he's a little unnerving, I'm glad he has maintained his spot in parking lot all these years!
